In fact the product managers had gone so far as saying that the Camaro is a “small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.” The Camaro is a pony car, and there were four different generations of the car produced until 2002 and can also be labelled as a muscle car or a ‘grand tourer’. The model which was in production and used up until1969 was part of the first generation of the Chevrolet Camaro.

The first generation cars had a shining new rear wheel drive GM F-body platform. The pony car was available as a two door coupe or convertible and was related to the Pontiac Firebird as far as body parts were concerned.

The engine was an inline 6 V8, and there was a choice between 4.9 litres, 5 litres, 5.4 litres, 5.7 litres and 6.5 litres. The Camaro was designed so as to fit a great number of power plants in the engine bay – showing a similar conventional rear-drive and front-engine configuration as the Mustang and Chevy.

The Camaro also featured prominently in the races, and the 1967-69 model won the Trans-Am title in 1968 and 1969. The Camaro also features in a number of popular songs, such as “Racing in the Streets”. The first generation Camaro has also inspired the design of a soon to be released (2010 to be precise) retro fifth generation of the Camaro.

That the Camaro is worth a buy is a certainty, however to get the cheapest deal for the Camaro, you need to look around. Internet auctions always provide cheap alternatives for all cars, including the Camaro. For vintage collectors, the first generation Camaro is worth a buy even if the price seems a little excessive. The Camaro is an excellent choice.

Debuting on an updated F-body platform, the model from Chevrolet (and General Motors as the parent company) came out in two body styles – the two-door coupé as well as the two-door convertible. The cars in its class include a compact or ‘pony’ car, a muscle car and a sports car – based on the optional components. The basic features of the Camaro remained the same as in previous years: two doors, 2 + 2 seating, available as a coupé or convertible, fitted with a rear-wheel drive, and given a choice of V6 and V8 engines for the car. The fourth generation Camaro lasted until 2002, when General Motors decided to discontinue production. On a more interesting note, the official pace car for the Indianapolis 500 is Camaro Z28.

Features of the fourth generation Camaro include a sixteen inch wheel/tire package, a V6 engine of 3.1 litre specification driven with 140 horsepower, a tilt steering wheel, driver-side air bag and General Motors’ trademark "passkey" anti theft ignition for all the models of the 1993-2002 series. A breath of fresh air came through the 1997 model which brought in a relatively new interior, whereas the 1998 model was revitalised and upgraded by tinkering with the engine and the exterior - General Motor's all-aluminium LS1 (346ci), which had been initiated into the Corvette C5, replaced the V6 engine.

Through the years, there were changes made a plenty – colours were added every now and then, and in 1998, aerodynamic flush headlights replaced the square inset ones. The car hardly received any tweaks between 1998 and 2002, as maintenance requirements were minimal.

With a lull in sales, the Camaro was sold at cheap prices towards the end of its production in 2002. However you can find the cheapest deals for the car at auctions on the internet. A good buy, indeed.
