Last updated on: Sep 05 2010
The Passat is one of the longest running and most popular cars ever made by Volkswagen. It was launched in 1973 and has gone through six design generations. The 2004 model belongs to the fifth design generation. The name of the car, ‘Passat’, means trade winds in German and the car lives up to its name by delivering speeds like the trade winds themselves!
The 2004 model was released by a introducing a few minor changes to the existing model. The designs were both in the engine and in the styling of the car. The car is available in two variants; the four door sedan and the five door estate and it is is also available with the option of four wheel drive. The petrol engine of the car is a 4.0 litre W8 producing an exhilarating 275 hp (202 kW). A powerful 2.0 litre diesel engine also made its first appearance with this 2004 model; it is a powerful turbocharged TDI engine producing 136 hp (100 kW). Apart from this the petrol engine is available in 2.8, 2.3, 2.0 and 1.8 litre variants. Likewise the diesel one is available in 1.9 and 2.5 litre variants.
The styling of the 2004 model is also changed from the previous models. Although the basic design and body panelling has remained, a few extra "frills" have been provided. New bumpers and tail lamps have been added for a start. A chrome finish has also been provided and all new projector optic headlamps have been incorporated in the car. The car comes available with standard five speed manual gear transmission and an optional five speed 5HP19 automatic gear transmission system.
This car is very popular for another reason, and that is its high fuel efficiency. The car is very cheap and not at all expensive but even cheaper deals are available though auctions.
