Volskswagen Beetle Classic (1974)
Last updated on: May 19 2013
One of the most recognisable cars on the roads and one of the most envied is the original Volkswagen Beetle. A small yet powerful car that has, for many years, been at the receiving end of reactions ranging from surprise to envious gawk. A car you can love or hate but can never ignore. That is the power of German engineering and the enigma of beetle.
It boasts a powerful in-line four cylinder engine with a displacement of 1641cc and has a compression ratio of 7.3:1. It delivers a powerful 46 brake horse power and still gives an amazing fuel efficiency of around 30 miles per gallon. It has a rear mounted air cooled engine and is equipped with a four speed manual gear box. It weighs around 830.5 kilo grams and gives a top speed of around 60 miles an hour. It was always very popular among the youth, even though it was never a muscle car or a speed demon. It was launched a year after the ground breaking 1973 model and it turned out that the 1974 Beetle was also one of the last cars from Volkswagen to retain the bug-like appearance.
It came in many colors including red, blue, orange, black and the ubiquitous yellow and despite its average features, it was the unique bug-like shape and unfailing quality of Volkswagen that attracted large number of people towards it and made it such a huge hit throughout Europe and America.
It’s available for a very cheap price of around $2000 on the internet but it’s possible to get even cheaper deals through auctions. Beetle lovers can get the cheapest deals through these auctions and become proud owners of one of the most popular cars of its time and, furthermore, one of the most popular cars to be ever launched in the market. A true wonder from the Volkswagen stable.
